Water Canyon & Lower Pine Creek Waterfall

Picture of water canyon.

White Dome via Water Canyon Trail – 6.2 miles, out and back. Difficult and requires some scrambling. I only made it to Top Rock which is about 3 miles, out and back.

This is another hike that is great to get out and escape the crowds of Zion. You will need an offline map and the ability to a little scrambling. You will see groups rappelling, but other than that, not many people compared to Zion. I would definitely recommend this hike to anyone who is in shape! I only made it to Top Rock and didn’t continue on to the White Domes

Getting There: From Springdale Map. You will not be going through the Zion National Park gates, so nothing to worry about there. Easy drive, well maintained gravel road. There are two parking lots, the first one you approach is an overflow lot, so try your luck and keep going a bit further. There are also bathrooms at this trailhead.

Highlights:

  • Rewarding Views: If you make it to the top you will be impressed by the panoramic vistas, comparable to those of Zion National Park.
  • Difficulty: Mixed on difficulty. The initial part is easy, but the trail gets steeper and requires scrambling after the waterfalls. It’s not recommended for beginners or those afraid of heights.
  • Distance: The distance varies depending on how far you go. You can turn around at the waterfall for a shorter hike, make it to Top Rock, or aim for the White Domes for a longer, more challenging adventure.
  • Navigation: The trail can be hard to follow, especially after the waterfalls. Downloading a map and having offline access is highly recommended.

Additional Tips:

  • Know Your Limits: This trail is not for everyone. If you are uncomfortable with heights or steep scrambles, there may be better options for you. If you feel you are in danger, you are going the wrong way!
  • Parking: The parking lot can fill up, so arrive early or be prepared to park further away.
  • Gear: Bring plenty of water, especially in hot weather. Sturdy hiking shoes with good traction are a must due to loose rocks, steep sections, and potential for scrambling.
  • Be Prepared for Weather Conditions: The trail can be icy or snowy in winter and spring. Check the forecast beforehand and dress accordingly.

Lower Pine Creek Waterfall Trail – 0.7 miles, out and back. Easy

Nice little outing for an evening or to kill some time. I wouldn’t categorize this as a “hike” per se, more of a nice walk with a few spots of scrambling. I would recommend this if you have time as it could be relaxing, based on the number of people on the trail. You can also go off the trail and check out the river.

Getting There: From Springdale map. You will go through the Zion National Park entrance and turn onto Hwy 9, so you can take your own vehicle. Parking might be difficult as you park along the road.

Highlights:

  • Beautiful scenery
  • Nice little waterfall at the end.
  • Minor scrambling
  • River access

Additional Tips:

  • Arrive early or go in the evening to avoid crowds
  • Plan on 30 minutes to an hour
  • Could be tricky if you’re not able bodied.
